Are skin tags and stretch marks related?

Pregnant women and those that gain a great deal of weight in a short span of time will have marks on their skin known as stretch marks. Millions of people have these on their bodies, and it’s not a detrimental thing. However, once weight loss has been garnered, or a baby is delivered, men and women may still have the marks. This may also come with skin tags, but are they related? To understand the connection, one has to define each issue, and how they are similar and how they are different. The short answer may be, “no”, they are not related, but the long answer may seem as though it negates that answer.

What Are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks usually start during puberty. As growth spurts hit people, the skin across the body starts to stretch quickly and can cause marks that are striations in the skin, and form what appear to be scars. These marks are unavoidable for some, and while it doesn’t affect every single person, there are millions of people that will have stretch marks, as this is commonplace for boys and girls alike.

The dermis stretches as a person gets taller, or gains weight. The same can be said for adults as they age, or women that are pregnant. During pregnancy, as the baby grows in the womb, a woman will gain weight and therefore stretch marks will form due to the stretching of the skin.

What Are Skin Tags?

Skin tags are non-cancerous cells that are evident as outer growths along the dermis. Collagen is pushed out to create overgrowths that appear at first glance to be zits, but they are not. Pulling, scratching, or trying to pop these will not suffice or change their appearance of growth. The issue is common amidst those that are gaining or lose weight rapidly, are diabetic, obese, or pregnant. These are unsightly, but they are not necessarily bad, and don’t usually hurt. In rare cases, they are indications of a bigger issue, but they can be taken care of at home with holistic or over the counter medications.

Are Skin Tags and Stretch Marks Related?

The only major relation between the two is that the dermis is reacting to the body’s changes. For men and women that are gaining or losing weight, the skin rubs against other tissue, causing growths (tags). In the case of stretch marks, the creases and lines that these create could lead to tags. The main cause of tags, however, is that dermis touches other dermis, rubbing against it. The cells touch, and cause growths. Stretch marks can lead to this, but may not be directly related to skin tags. There’s a balance that has to be held to have both comply.

To answer the initial question, there is a relationship since the dermis is made up of several layers. One may follow another, but they are not the same, and can be isolated. While some may have stretch marks, they may not have skin tags. Some individuals will have tags, but no stretch marks, so they do not necessarily mean that they will manifest in the same place, or alongside one another.
